What Is Recite Me?
Recite Me is an online accessibility toolbar that enables patients, families, carers and external healthcare professionals to customise how they view and interact with the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHC) website to suit their individual needs.
In short, it lets you change how this website looks and sounds, making it easier for you to use.
The toolbar can support people with different accessibility needs, including people with sight loss or dyslexia, as well as people who speak English as a second language.
How to Open Recite Me
Recite Me can be opened by selecting ‘Accessibility and translation’ at the top of the page. The Recite Me toolbar will then appear at the top of your screen.

How can I use Recite Me?
Accessibility Tools
Toolbar Functions
The Recite Me toolbar includes a range of accessibility and translation tools. Explore the options below to find out what each function does.
Hear the Words Read Aloud
Select 'Text to speech' to hear the website read aloud.
Change the Text Size
Tap the plus (+) or minus (-) buttons to make the text bigger or smaller.
Change the Font
Using 'Font options', choose a font that is easier to read, such as Arial or a font designed for dyslexia. You can also adjust line height and character spacing.
Focus Text
'Focus text' can improve readability and comprehension by highlighting key parts of words as you read.
Translate the Page
Select 'Translation' to change the website into your preferred language. There are over 100 languages available, with text-to-speech available for more than 60.
PDF documents hosted on the site can also be translated. They will open in Recite Me's Doc Reader, where you can select a language using the same translation option.
Change the Colours
Use 'Colour theme' to change the background and text colours to ones that are more comfortable for your eyes.
Add a Ruler
'Ruler options' allows you to add a ruler to the page to help guide your reading.
Change the Cursor
Make the cursor larger or change its colour to make navigating the page easier.
Add a Screen Mask
Screen Mask creates a letterbox effect by shading areas of the screen while leaving a horizontal band of text visible. This can help you focus on a particular section of content.
Change Page Options
'Page options' allows you to:
- Pause animations and video.
- Hide images.
- View image descriptions.
- View the site in plain text mode.
Alter the Page Structure
View an overview of the page layout and quickly navigate to headings, landmarks and links.
Use the Dictionary
Open 'Dictionary' and highlight a word on the page to view its definition.
Summarise or Simplify a Page
Condense longer web pages into shorter, easy-to-read summaries. The 'Simplify' option can further reduce content into a series of bullet points.
Download Audio
Highlight your chosen text and select 'Download audio' to create and save a downloadable MP3 file.

Reset the Toolbar
Use Reset to restore the Recite Me toolbar to its default settings.

Automated Accessibility Features
Some Recite Me features, including text-to-speech, translation and content summarisation, are automated. There may occasionally be inaccuracies or inconsistencies in the results.

Yes. Recite Me works on multiple devices and operating systems, including Android, iOS, Linux, Mac and Windows devices.
No. Recite Me is cloud-based and does not require installation on your device.
Auto read is enabled when the toolbar is opened. To switch it off, select 'Text to Speech' and untick the option.
Yes. Recite Me uses cookies to save your settings.
Your settings will be cleared if you:
- View the website in incognito or private browsing mode.
- Delete your cookies.
- Select 'Reset toolbar'.
Website: Select 'Translation' on the toolbar. A dropdown list of more than 100 languages will appear. More than 60 of these can also be set to read aloud.
PDFs: Open the PDF in your browser. Select 'Translation' from the navigation bar and choose your preferred language.
Yes. The Recite Me accessibility toolbar uses AI to support several features that help personalise the user experience, including:
- Text-to-speech.

To create an MP3 audio file:
- Highlight the text you want to convert to audio.
- Select 'Download audio' from the toolbar.
- The MP3 will download automatically to your device, where you can listen to it or save it to another location.
Select the 'X' on the toolbar. This will close Recite Me.
